…More CA Harvest reports… We are very excited!

It will be a harvest to cherish and remember, that’s for sure. With ripeness choices left almost completely up to the winemakers, and with so much high-quality fruit harvested, we can look forward to a plethora of styles and expressions in the bottle. And, if that wasn’t enough, the families of winemakers all up and down the Valley will be thanking their good fortune during the upcoming holidays, when their winemaking loved ones will actually be relaxing, at home.

Ken Bernards, Ancien Wines

We couldn’t be more thrilled with the quality with the quality we’re seeing so far- thorough ripeness , profound aromatics, explosive flavors, and tons of color and gorgeously resolved tannins. We’ve already had multiple growers compare 2012 and 2013 to 2001 and 2002: back to back spectacular vintages, with different but equally compelling personalities.
Paul Colantuoni, Rocca Family Vineyards

What a fantastic vintage it has been. Our mid-August start was fast and furious with the larger than normal Sauvignon Blanc crop. Having some extra fruit on the vines this season was a plus as it allowed the flavors to develop without sugars skyrocketing. The mid-September rains gave us a chance to catch our breath and settle the dust. Fall has been beautiful in Napa Valley. Nice warm days and cool nights have given the Cabernets a chance to ease into full maturity and us a chance to finish at an unhurried pace. The crop seems to be about average or slightly less in size. This vintage could be epic!

Kristin Belair, Honig Vineyard & Winery

Fully flavored and richly textured yet well balanced whites and powerfully concentrated reds seem to be the rule this year from Calistoga and throughout the Napa valley as a whole. I thought it would be difficult to surpass the 2012 vintage over the course of the next few years, but I was happily mistaken- two great vintages in a row like 1990-1991, 1994-1995 and 2001-2002.

2013 California Wine Harvest Report: Ideal Growing Season Assures Outstanding 2012 Vintage

SAN FRANCISCO — The 2013 California wine grape harvest yielded generous amounts of high quality fruit, and winemakers across the state are describing this year’s vintage as “excellent,” “outstanding” and “ideal.” “The 2013 vintage will offer consumers in our growing national and international markets fantastic choices,” said Robert P. (Bobby) Koch, President and CEO of Wine Institute.

“Mother Nature smiled upon the California wine harvest this year with a bountiful crop of amazing quality,” said Kathleen Heitz, President of Heitz Wine Cellars. “The diversity and depth of talented winemakers throughout the state promise some exciting and vibrant wines from the stellar 2013 vintage.”

“The 2013 harvest has been exceptional,” said Frank Cabral, Director of Grower Relations for Trinchero Family Estates. “Moderate weather throughout the growing season has put little pressure on the vines, and provided grapes with well-balanced chemistries. “The 2013 harvest on the North Coast can be summed up in one word, ‘outstanding,’” reported Bob Blue, Winemaker at Bonterra Vineyards in Ukiah. “It was back to a normal harvest picking timeline, only slightly later on the calendar than an average year, with an abundance of sunshine. Overall the quality has really been special this year, the fruit is ripe and concentrated. There were no disease issues with any of the grapes. The Pinot Noir has amazing fruit intensity, with classic varietal tones of strawberry and spices. Chardonnay has wonderful concentration and a mélange of fruit flavors from peaches to apples and lemon. Merlot has beautiful color and ripeness, with rich blueberry flavors. The Cabernet has outstanding flavors.”

Time for Chile Wine

Chile is emerging as a wine producing powerhouses due to the deep and earthy texture of its wines and dry climate. South America is making great strides in improving the quality of their product, and are rivaling some of the best wines in the world.
